What We Do

Sheffield is one of only ten consortia in England to be awarded Cultural Destinations round 1 funding by Arts Council England and Visit England. The purpose of the funding was to:

  • encourage more and different people to experience arts and culture, contributing to the growth of the local visitor economy
  • increase income and sustainability for cultural organisations and tourism businesses
  • reposition culture as a key part of the visitor offer and local economic growth plans

This project ran from April 2014 to March 2017, and included £270,000 from the Arts Council/Visit England and £40,000 from the City Council and the University of Sheffield.

The Cultural Destinations project had three strands:

Understanding the audience
Getting better data on current visitors to help future marketing and promotion, to help visitors to come more often, stay longer and enjoy more; and an on-going evaluation of the project’s impact.  &Co Marketing did this for us.

Creative signposting
The project supported a new expanded version of the Our Favourite Places website, to improve visitor information. Our Favourite Places highlights the city’s authentic and independent cultural activities, festivals and visitor attractions, as well as eating places, coffee houses, real ale and places to stay, and suggests linked activities to create longer stays.

Enhancing the destination
We gave business support for a number of Sheffield festivals to help them become more sustainable and to grow, including:

  • Doc/Fest
  • Tramlines
  • Off the Shelf
  • Art Sheffield
  • Festival of the Mind
  • Sensoria
  • Sheffield Design Week
  • Children’s Media Conference
  • Classical Weekend
